Which toothpaste is the best? The short answer is the one that works for you, but here are a few things to look for:

Fluoride
A 2015 screening by the Hawaii State Department of Health found that our keiki have the highest prevalence of tooth decay in the country. Lack of fluoride in our water makes this natural mineral compound the most important ingredient to look for in your toothpaste. Fluoride prevents tooth decay and protects against cavities. The good news is it’s already in most toothpastes sold in the United States, just check the ingredient list to be sure.

Whitening
We all want a bright, white smile. Toothpaste with peroxide and other whitening agents can help remove surface stains and whiten teeth. Just know that whitening toothpaste can increase tooth sensitivity. If you want a whiter smile but your teeth are sensitive, look for a toothpaste for sensitive teeth that also contains a whitening agent.

Sensitivity
As luck would have it you can buy toothpaste for sensitive teeth just about anywhere. It’s typically more expensive, but can make a big difference if your teeth are sensitive. You only need to use it for two weeks to see results. Consult your dentist if your sensitivity persists.

Natural Choices
If commercial toothpastes aren’t your thing, you can choose from a number of natural options. Just remember natural toothpastes don’t typically contain fluoride. Baking soda is an inexpensive natural option that can help to remove light surface stains. Brushing with a healthy glob of baking soda may not taste great, but your teeth will feel amazing from the deep clean it provides.

Allergies
If you start using a new toothpaste and you notice odd symptoms, stop using that toothpaste and try a different one. It may be too strong for you or you may have an allergy to one of its ingredients.

Choosing a toothpaste you like makes brushing twice daily easy. Pick the toothpaste that works best for you and brush your way to a cleaner, brighter smile!
