Frequently Asked Questions about Homeschooling

Q: What sort of school schedule did you have?
A: I followed the same hours as the public schools, but I ended earlier (or later) depending on how fast I finished my schoolwork. I didn’t have a set recess, but I took breaks when I needed them.

Q: Did you get school holidays and vacation days?
A: Yes. The goal is to complete a semester’s worth of schoolwork on time. If you take too many days off, you may end up doing schoolwork on holidays and weekends.

Q: Do parents need to be certified teachers?
A: Hawai‘i laws are complicated, but the short answer: No.

Q: Did you have a “school room”?
A: In the beginning, I did my assignments at a desk in the living room. In high school, I did my schoolwork in my bedroom.

Q: Did you have to buy textbooks?
A: Yes, and they’re expensive. Even though you still pay taxes to support the public school system, homeschoolers pay for all their own books and supplies.

Q: Did your dog ever bother you while you were in class?
A: I’m a cat person, and yes – she liked to sit on my books while I studied.
